So, today you are thinking about how to start a blog ? Let me help you ! My ultimate goal is to explain the required steps to get your awesome and successful blog. Don’t worry no technical experience required.
I remembered i created my first blog in 2008, it took me months and months to figure it out. i googled, i saw YouTube videos and finally came up with this blog. In this step by step guide i will let you go through step by step instructions.
Basic Steps To Start A Blog
These are some important steps which require attention before starting a blog
- What your blog is all about
- Blogging platform
- Domain Name
- WordPress installation
- Design your blog
Step 1 :- What your blog is all about
If you are running a business, company or organization then it will be easy for you to determine. your blog should be related to your product, service or any other cause.
If you are an individual, you have more options to choose your topic. But one should remember below things
Choose a topic
- With plenty of room for discussion
- A topic something you enjoy
- In which you think you can establish yourself
Step 2 :- Blogging Platform
There are lot of services you can use to start your blog. Many free services gives us flexibility to start a blog but are available with limited features and less control over your blog.
What is the best blogging platform ?
WordPress is by far the most popular blogging platform. I use WordPress for my blog and really enjoying it’s flexibility, ease of use, and large community of people who share different ideas and help solve technical problems.
- Hosted WordPress blogs are often referred to as WordPress.com blogs
- Self Hosted WordPress blogs are often referred to as WordPress.org
A Self Hosted WordPress costs a little bit money, but it will give you more flexibility and control. This guide will also gives the steps to start a self hosted WordPress blog.
Step 3 :- Hosting
A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible via the World Wide Web – Wikipedia
Start to Bluehost
Take a deep breath, you are going to start your own blog. Start by clicking here to go to Bluehost
Once the page opens, Click the green get started now button
The above image may vary from the ones you see on screen. Because Bluehost makes regular site improvement. Don’t worry the process will remain same.
Select you plan
I typically prefer plus and prime plan because you get more unlimited features. If your budget is very tight ( I can understand ) don’t worry go ahead and choose Basic plan. You can upgrade the plan at any time.
Click on the green Select button to move to the next step
Step 4 :- Domain Name
A domain is a web address. letmehelpyou.in is domain name. You may or may not have domain name already registered. To have an existing domain name, you would have registered it with a domain registrar like GoDaddy or Namecheap
On next screen you will either choose a brand new domain name ( Left ) or enter a domain which you have already registered. ( Right )
If you don’t have a domain, enter a new domain name on left side. Make sure to choose correct extension of your choice from the drop down menu beside it.
If you’ve already registered a domain name, enter it on the right (don’t worry, it won’t mess things up if you’re using the domain elsewhere)
For the purpose of this tutorial, I will use a new domain. If you are using an existing domain, the process is mostly the same. You can still follow along easily. You will only see minor differences in the choices on the screen, etc
After entering your new or existing domain, click the blue Next button.
Enter your account information
On the next page, enter your account info. Make sure you use a working email address because this is where your login information will be sent.
Select an account plan
In this account plan information you have to choose a package based on how far in advance you want to pay. Bluehost bills 1,2 or 3 years at a time but it works if you see reasonable monthly amount.
What about Extras
On package information form you can see extra options to choose like Site back up pro, Search engine jump start, site lock security etc. i preferred to skip this other add-ons. I will go with Domain privacy protection. This keeps any personal information private. if you are using your personal contact info like address, phone etc. to register a domain i recommend domain privacy.
The total is the amount you’ll pay today. You won’t have to pay again for 1,2 or 3 years, depending on the account plan you chose.
Enter your Billing information
After you read the print and then click the submit button. Next fill your billing information
Continue your purchase. you will be asked if you want to add any upgrades just skip that part.
Check your Email for login information
After you complete your purchase, check your email. You will find welcome email from Bluehost. This email will also include your Control panel (Cpanel) login information. Keep this information secure and for future reference.
Login to your Bluehost Cpanel
Open Bluehost and click the Login button in the right corner of your screen or you can use your cpanel link contained in the welcome email you received from Bluehost.
Select the Hosting login if it’s not selected already. Use your google account to login or enter your cpanel login info from that welcome email.
Step 5 :- WordPress installation
Once you logged into your cpanel account, click the install WordPress icon under website/website builder
you will see a window that looks like as shown below. Click Continue Installation button to begin WordPress Installation Process.
Where to install WordPress
On the next screen, choose the domain you want to install WordPress on. If the domain you chose during signup doesn’t appear, Click domain and you can select it from the drop down list.
Remember you are beginner, Leave that directory field blank and then click Next
Next you will ask to add plugins. Just deselect them you can add plugins later.
WordPress user info
Enter your Site Name or Title (e.g. shailesh’s Blog, Mike’s Factory, etc.). This is different than your domain which ends in .com or something similar.
You may also be given the option to choose an Admin Username (do not use “admin” as your username). Choose a password. These will be what you use to login to WordPress once it’s installed.
Enter your email address (again, all site information will be sent here). Read and agree to the terms. Complete your installation of WordPress.
WordPress login information
After WordPress has been installed, All the information will sent to you via email.
At this point, you will have received two welcome emails. The first is the login info for your Bluehost hosting account. The second is the login info for your WordPress account. From now onward, you’ll be using your WordPress login information much more frequently.
Did you register a new or existing domain in Step 4?
- If you registered a new domain in step 4
- you can now type your domain into browser and your WordPress site will appear.
- If you click on Site URL in your second welcome email which is WordPress welcome email it will take you to the brand new live website.
- If you click on Login URL link it will take you to the WordPress login page where you have to enter WordPress username & Password and you will be redirected to the back end of your site. Generally this login URL will be like domainname.com/wp-admin This is where you will write post, add plugins, change themes etc ( Overall setting of your site)
- If you used an existing domain in step 4
- note – your existing domain will not display your new site until you change your name server where your new domain is registered. Changing name server points your domain to this new site
- Don’t change your name servers until your new site is set up and ready to go. As you change your name servers your domain will bring visitors to this new site.
- You can use temporary URL to access your new WordPress blog.
- To change the name servers where your domain is currently registered, first note your new Bluehost name server information:
Next, go to the registrar where your existing domain is currently registered (Namecheap, GoDaddy, etc.). You will need to enter the above information in the appropriate place. This varies among registrars so I recommend you call them if it’s not clear.
Step 6 :- Design your Blog
Congratulations ! now you are a owner of self hosted WordPress Site. There are many things you can do at this point.
You can login into your WordPress account from the second email you receive through WordPress Username and Password.
At this stage you can customize your site as per your requirement. means you can do
- Write your first post
- Change theme of the site
- Add different plugins
- General Setting
- Change Appearance of the site like add logo, add advertisement widgets
- Manage pages
- Manage your site users and many more. The list will go on.
